Essential Questions

  1. How is Santiago different at the end of the book than at the beginning?
  2. What things beyond Santiago's control have interrupted his life? How have they been instructive?
  3. What is a "Personal Legend"? What are the "omens" that Santiago has learned to look out for? What have they meant and how have they guided him?
  4. Why do you think the book ends the way it does in the epilogue? What does it tell you about the search for truth or meaning?
  5. Consider the obstacles outlined at the Introduction. How are we trapped by social and psychological pressures when we pursue our personal calling? How do we overcome these obstacles?
